At the age of fourteen she was given a role in a film by Raj Kapoor and at the age of sixteen she acted opposite Amitabh Bachchan in Deewana (1980) and opposite Dharmendra in Saajan (1984). Her debut film was a box office success. In 1993, she starred alongside Aamir Khan in the hit film Qayamat se Qayamat Tak.
In 2002, she acted opposite Ajay Devgan and Akshay Kumar in Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam. In 2011, she won critical acclaim for her role as an aging actress in Phobia.
